What does being AACSB International accredited mean?

We have reached and exceeded the standards set out by AACSB International, and we are continuously working to improve the educational experience.

You have probably noticed the phrase AACSB International accredited in our literature. We are taking this opportunity to tell you a little about what this means.

What is the 'AACSB-International'?

AACSB International-The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business Education is a not-for-profit corporation of educational institutions, corporations and other organizations devoted to the promotion and improvement of higher education in business administration and management.

What are the standards?

Standards for accreditation address high quality in terms of faculty, curriculum, students, & support services.

Faculty qualifications, their contributions to teaching, to research and to service are among the issues considered. Curriculum is examined in terms of content both inside and outside of business. The AACSB International is also concerned with teaching methods, integration of material, and the process for designing and changing the curriculum. Students must be selected and educated to produce high quality graduates. Also, the school must provide resources to retain these students and including technological, library and career development support.

What checks are there to see that the School is still up to par?

Programs are reviewed periodically to be sure they are maintaining standards, and that they have a process in place to continually improve their institution. Schools are reviewed five years after the first accreditation, and every ten years after that.

Aren't all of the Business Schools I might have heard of accredited?

Not all business schools are accredited. You can expect to find that many of the schools you might consider for your education are accredited and it is an important question to ask them. College or University accreditation does not mean the individual programs in that College or University are accredited. The University of Vermont School of Business is the only accredited Business program in Vermont.

Is there anything else I should know?

Honor students in Business are recognized through membership in Beta Gamma Sigma. To become a member you must be in the top 10% of your senior class. Only schools with AACSB-International accreditation may offer membership into Beta Gamma Sigma to their students.

What about UVM, is it accredited too?

Absolutely, UVM is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., a nationally recognized organization. Accreditation at this level indicates that the college is one which has available the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs and will continue to do so.
