Abstract: Achieving a consistent market orientation is a challenge for entrepreneurial firms. This research seeks improved understanding of how internal process management assists and hinders small growing firms in achieving the responsiveness component of a market orientation (Kohli and Jaworski 1990). Under process management firms implement internal systems, procedures and performance measures to improve performance and responsiveness to changing markets. Benefits include improved market sensing, two-way communication and coordinated responses to market demands. Despite the potential benefits, researchers question whether the internal structure and control of process management will improve responsiveness in entrepreneurial firms. Process management may conflict with the organizational cultures, agility and responsiveness of entrepreneurial companies. Research results identify how process management assists and hinders the responsiveness component of market orientation in small firms. Management implications and strategies for coping with growth challenges are presented.

Abstract: Delivering excellent educational experiences through distance media continues to challenge academia as working professionals increasingly demand distance education. This paper identifies and explores challenges associated with teaching a complex hybrid distance information systems course within the context of distance learning models in relation to learning styles. The course was project based, focusing on designing and developing a web-based entrepreneurship knowledge portal while teaching graduate students the complex concepts of systems analysis and design. Virtual teams of graduate students participated from their locations throughout the state of Maine as well as in Rhode Island and Virginia, using asynchronous communication along with synchronous videoconference meetings. The paper provides lessons learned from this experience that can be applied in distance graduate courses.

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to share the experiences and lessons learned from an experimental graduate class using Web-based technologies that resulted in the development of a statewide entrepreneurship knowledge portal. Given the demands for Web-based systems and technologies to facilitate entrepreneurship, this class experience could be used as a model to help other states build or improve upon their entrepreneurial Web-based systems. The research was driven by the results of a comprehensive Kauffman Foundation study of Maine entrepreneurs??? needs. This article also explores issues and challenges associated with teaching a complex course using complex Web-based technologies, distance delivery techniques, and working with entrepreneurs to meet their needs.

Abstract: Entrepreneurship and Technology Track:
Small, entrepreneurial firms face major internal challenges as they move from start-up through the rapid growth phase. This transition to rapid growth demands significant changes in how internal operations are managed. Some researchers have encouraged small firms to adopt process management. Other researchers and entrepreneurs have raised serious questions about the effectiveness and "fit" of process management in small entrepreneurial firms. This research investigates how process management may assist (or hinder) the flexibility and responsiveness of small, rapidly growing firms to changing customer needs.
