10/17/2006 David Jones, Assistant Professor of Business Administration, conducted a workshop at the fall conference for the Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility. The workshop was co-conducted with Paul Millman, CEO of Chroma Technology, who focused on employee-owned companies. David's presentation was titled "Effects of Socially Responsible Practices on the Workforce: Benefits for Firms & Their Employees." David discussed research on the link between socially responsible business practices and orgainizations' financial performance, and on the reasons that explain this relationship. His focus was mostly on what research shows and suggests about the effects of socially responsible practices on the workforce. For example, socially responsible companies may tend to attract employees who are more altruistic, and this disposition relates to effective teamwork and cooperative behaviour at work. Moreover, some employees likely feel committed and proud to work in companies that, for example, engage in community service, and these feelings are associated with outcomes that benefit employees and the organization (e.g., job satisfaction, a positive social identity, retention, and cooperative behavior.) David offered recommendations for practice and concluded with some preliminary findings from a study in which he is testing these ideas.
