Removing Your Computer from the Network

 

WARNING: This is not suggested if you are still a Business Student.  Doing this will prevent you from easily using Outlook to view your BSADmail, will limit our ability to support your computer and limit your network resources.

If you want to remove your computer from the domain (Win2000/XP) but still want all of your settings and files to be the same on you computer, you need to do the following:

Removing Your Computer From the BSADNET Domain

1. Right Click your My Computer icon and select ‘Manage’
2. In the Microsoft Management Console, double click Local Users & Groups
3. Click Users
OPTIONAL but Recommended: Confirm you know your Administrator Password:
  a. Right click ‘Administrator’ in the right hand column and select ‘Set Password’
  b. Click Proceed
  c. Enter a Password that YOU WON’T FORGET!!! Very important to remember this.
  d. Click OK and then Click OK.
4. In the right hand column, right click the blank space and select ‘New User…’
5. Enter a user name (like Bill or Sam)
6. Enter a password if you so choose (be sure to remember it!!!).
7. De-Select the ‘User Must Change password at next logon’
8. Check the box ‘Password never expires’
9. Click Create and the click close
10. In the left hand column, click Groups.
11. Double click ‘Administrators’
12. Click Add
13. Click Locations
14. Chose the top item (Your Computer name, NOT bsad.uvm.edu) and click OK
15. Enter the username you just created in step 5 and click ok
16. Click Ok
17. Right click your My Computer icon and select ‘Properties’
18. Go to the Computer Name tab and click ‘Change’
19. Under ‘Member of’ select ‘WorkGroup’ and enter ‘WorkGroup’ in the text box
20. click Ok
21. Enter your BSADNET Username and password
22. Keep clicking OK until the system reboots
23. After rebooting, enter the username you set in step 5 and the password you entered in step 6
24. After logging, go to your Start MenuControl PanelUser AccountsUser Accounts
25. Click on ‘Change the way users log on or off’
26. After the warning pops up, click ok and then DE-SELECT the ‘Enable Off line Files’ check box and click ok
27. Click on ‘Change the way users log on or off
28. Check the ‘Use the Welcome Screen’ box and click ‘Apply Options’

PLEASE NOTE: NONE OF YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN DELETED.  They are just located in a different profile


29. Open My Computer and click on the C: Drive (click on ‘show the contents of this folder’ if you don’t see anything)
30. All of your data is in the folder called ‘Documents & Settings’ in the folder with your BSADNET username…open this folder
31. Here you will see a folder called Desktop:  this has everything on your old desktop…move the files you want from here to your new desktop
32. You will also see a folder in this old profile called ‘My Documents’….open this folder and move all of the contents from there to your new Profile’s My Documents.
