Two minors are available for students with majors outside of the School of Business Administration, a
Minor in Accounting and a
Minor in Business Administration. For either minor, students need to submit an application and to successfully complete the prerequisite courses. Applications are available in 101 Kalkin Hall. You can also download the application:
MINOR APPLICATIONWhy Minor in Business Administration?
If admitted to the MBA program, you have the opportunity to complete an MBA in one year of full time study with careful planning. As an undergraduate you need to take two courses beyond the minor and select the correct courses to fulfill your minor requirements.
MBA In One Year Option
If admitted to the MBA program, the prerequisite coursework for the MBA program would automatically be satisfied by complying with the prerequisite courses for the undergraduate Minor. With careful planning, it is possible to complete the MBA program in one year.
One year MBA opportunity: A student minoring in Business Administration may complete an MBA at UVM in one year after earning a bachelor's degree if: (1)
BSAD 60 and
BSAD 61 are completed; (2) four of
BSAD 120,
BSAD 132,
BSAD 150,
BSAD 173, and
BSAD 180 are selected to meet the minor requirement; (3) the remaining course on this list is taken as elective; and (4) the student applies and is admitted to the MBA program under regular criteria.
Why Minor in Accounting?
An accounting background is useful for many career paths. Most obvious are jobs directly related to accounting and finance. However, people in many other careers and in a variety of settings--corporate, small business, or not-for-profit organizations--find an understanding of accounting useful. The Accounting Minor allows you to better prepare for a career pursuing a non-business major.
CPA Option
To become a CPA, you need a combination of education, experience and the CPA examination. The minimum education requirement is the Professional Accounting Minor coursework plus Business Law (BSAD 17), Advance Accounting (BSAD 266) and Auditing (BSAD 267). Additional requirements to sit for the CPA exam vary by state.
