mtomas@bsad.uvm.edu
The Finance & Investment Club at UVM is sponsored by the Student Government Association and is open to all UVM students. The club meets regularly in Kalkin Hall. During these meetings, members discuss the current trends of the market, key in on the hot stocks to watch, and learn a little more about how to become a responsible investor. In addition to gaining important background information on capital investment, members participate in a virtual online investment competition with fake money and real time stocks as well as utilize Thomson terminals to conduct financial market research. This allows members to learn the investing ropes on their own as well as to make their own decisions without the risk of losing real capital. The club also brings in guest speakers from different firms once or twice a semester. These speakers provide insight into the investment industry and answer members’ questions.
Each year the club participates in one or two networking trips to financial centers – past trips have included New York City and Boston, with visits to leading financial services firms. The trips allow members to do a bit of networking for jobs and internships and also help inform students of the different perspectives and goals of each company. The club offers a great general introduction to investing to those interested in personal investment and to those interested in pursuing a career in investment banking.

The Student Advisory Committee (SAC) to the Dean and Associate Dean of the School of Business Administration is dedicated to increasing communication between students and faculty in order to improve the quality of education and the general atmosphere at UVM. The Committee members meet weekly to discuss business school student issues. The Committee has an anonymous feedback system by which students may send comments and criticisms about the program. The SAC reviews these issues and presents its findings to the Deans of the School of Business. The Committee is able to address student concerns as well as to raise the Deans’ awareness of these concerns. The SAC is currently focusing on improving the student/advisor relationship and is actively seeking feedback for student concerns about how we can improve courses as well as build a stronger community.
Student Outreach Committee (SOC)

SOC members serve as the student voice for the School of Business Administration. Members of SOC act as ambassadors to prospective students and their families who are interested in studying business administration at UVM. Members may be asked to staff tables at academic fairs, serve on panels, talk to visitors one-on-one, provide mini-tours and participate in Open Houses for newly admitted students. In addition, each SOC member will be trained to help first-year students adjust to life at UVM. SOC members offer help on a range of issues, from small lifestyle questions such as where to get pizza, to more important topics like learning to manage course workloads, adjusting study habits to suit a particular course or professor, and the course registration process. They assist first-year BSAD students in identifying academic resources, subject-area tutors, and study groups. Lastly, SOC members will be invited to participate in a range of School of Business events such as study abroad forums, career and alumni panels, honors day, and graduation. Participation in SOC is open to second-semester first-year students, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Questions regarding SOC should be directed to Jennifer Fath or a member of the student leadership team ~ Lindsay Farrell, Prospective Student Liaison; Kiley Manahan, Current Student Liaison; Erin McElaney, Training Coordinator.
