Asst. Professor Novak's Work Published

Asst. Professor David NovakThe University of Vermont’s School of Business Administration is proud to announce that Assistant Professor, David Novak will be published in the October 2009 issue of Transportation Letters. Jim Sullivan, Lisa Aultman-Hall, and David Novak co-authored the paper, “A review of current practice in network disruption analysis and an assessment of the ability to account for isolating links in transportation networks”.

Sullivan graduated with an MS in Civil Engineering in spring 2009 and currently works as a Research Engineer at UVM’s Transportation Research Center. Aultman-Hall is the Director of the UVM Transportation Research Center and a Professor in the School of Engineering.

This paper is the first in a series of research papers that stem from Sullivan’s thesis work related to the Network Robustness Index and is based on the literature review. The paper presents a framework for categorizing transportation network disruption studies to facilitate a better understanding of the field. A wide variety of solution methodologies are currently employed in the study of network disruption and there is very little consistency with respect to the terminology used. They specifically focus on the importance of dealing with isolating links in transportation networks. Isolating links provide the sole connection to/from one sub-network to another, and must be accounted for when measuring network robustness and network vulnerability.

Funding for the studies was provided by two grants:  Using Network Disruptions to Measure System Robustness, New England University Transportation Center at MIT, and Application of the Network Robustness Index to Identify Critical Road Network Links, University of Vermont Transportation Center.

The International Journal of Transportation Research is a quarterly journal that publishes high-quality review and min-review papers as well as major contributions to the state of the art in transportation research.  The focus of Transportation Letters is on analytical and empirical findings, methodological papers, and theoretical and conceptual insights across all areas of research in transportation.
