UVM TEAM TAKES FIRST PRIZE IN ETHICS COMPETITION

This past semester three undergraduate students and two graduate students from the School of Business participated in the annual St. Michael’s College Ethics Competition: Rebekah Shippee, Heather Schill, and Erik Giard-Chase represented the undergraduate team and Michael Laramee and Anna Zimina represented the graduate team. The competition required the students to interpret and analyze a business case regarding ethical decision making. This year’s case focused on Nestle Corporation and their decision to go fair trade. Both teams from the University of Vermont were amongst the top four finishers after the written paper round. Following the paper round the students were invited to participate in an oral competition. This level of the competition required a 20 minute presentation about Nestlé’s ethical decision making and the teams’ own suggestions and outlook.
The UVM teams competed against students from around the New England and New York area. Both the UVM undergraduate and graduate teams finished in 1st place and took home a total grand prize of $1150 each! The teams would like to thank their coach Professor Deri Meier.
