In Memory of Jack Grinnell

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of D. Jacque 'Jack' Grinnell.  Jack's quiet, steady presence as a scholar, teacher and leader had a significant and profound effect.  Be it a building that serves as home to the business school, a concentration in management and the environment, or a steadying and reasonable voice in faculty governance, Jack left us a foundation to build upon.

His family is arranging a memorial service to be held on Friday, August 1, 2003 in the Catholic Center on the Redstone Campus of the University of Vermont.  The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a scholarship fund being established in Jack's name.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jack and his family,

Rocki

A Citation to Jack Grinnell on the occasion of his retirement:

CITATION
Jack Grinnell

D. Jacque Grinnell, you have served the University of Vermont with distinction for 24 years. During those years, your students, your colleagues and your discipline have benefited from your energy, enthusiasm, integrity and many achievements.

You earned your B.S. and MBA from Cornell University and your DBA from Indiana in 1968. You came to the University in 1978 as a Professor of Accounting in the then Department of Business Administration in the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Business (EMBA) after serving for eleven years on the accounting faculty at the University of Connecticut.

In the fall of 1985 you assumed the position of Interim Dean of the School of Business Administration, serving in that position for two years. In addition to the onerous administrative duties required of your position as Interim Dean, you taught three courses during your first year and two the second. You were instrumental in the planning, design and building of Kalkin Hall, home of the School of Business Administration. You were also instrumental in helping the School of Business Administration achieve AACSB accreditation in 1986, an achievement attained by fewer than 250 schools of business at that time. Since then you have been a driving force in the re-accreditation process on two other occasions.

You have been an active scholar in the field of accounting and a pioneer in the emerging field of management and the environment. You were instrumental in the development and delivery of the School's concentration in management and the environment. Your research in the area of accounting and the environment has earned you an international reputation. In 2002, you were inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Northeast Region of the American Accounting Association.

Jacque Grinnell, your colleagues and students thank you for your continued devotion to the School of Business Administration at the University of Vermont. We wish you a long, healthy, enjoyable and productive retirement. You have well earned the rank as Professor Emeritus of Business Administration.
