Ok, beyond the obvious

Okay, beyond the obvious of being a 4 season playground … Why UVM?  Why business at UVM?

Let’s put answers to these questions in the context of your college degree as a foundation for the rest of your life.

Premise #1:  You’ll be creating and adding value in a dynamic global marketplace.  Being a responsible, committed and effective business leader requires that you have a broad foundation for understanding the values, needs, and standards of the consumers, enterprises and institutions you will serve as well as topnotch business analytics and decision-making skills.

The UVM BSAD approach:   You’ll have a balanced approach to taking classes with the best and brightest professors in and outside business.  At UVM, your faculty are individuals who community leaders, policy makers, entrepreneurs, executives, alumni and policy makers have come to rely on for advice and counsel.   Testing your thoughts and logic in a structured academic context and in conversations with our alumni will give you practice and help instill confidence in your ability to make a difference.

Premise#2:  You’ll need to understand the basic building blocks of economies and markets and consider their likely evolution.  The fundamental arenas for creating and adding value will persist while the tools and techniques for creating and adding value will continuously evolve.

The UVM BSAD approach:  We develop your basic business literacy and add a unique “Vermont” perspective to the experience.  You’ll have exposure to all the traditional business disciplines like economics, accounting, finance, marketing, management, information systems and decision analysis.  We’ll help you see these disciplines in the context of economic sectors and institutions like energy and power, telecommunications and media, health, housing, food, banking, education and government.  And for good Vermont measure, we’ll provide you with opportunities to analyze and critique the functioning and failure of capital markets, the relationship of business to natural and social environments, and the underlying assumptions of self-reliance.

Premise #3:  Your words and deeds will follow you around the globe.  Mindfulness of who you are, what matters most, and how you live your personal vision and mission will help you focus your energy on activities that enhance your understanding of your role on this planet and help you avoid the pitfalls of embarrassing Face Book moments.

The UVM BSAD approach:  As a small school within a small university, we make efforts to get to know you early on.  In your first year at UVM, your professional advisors will spend time with you to help you discover the wide array of leadership opportunities available now and in the future.  We’ll help you select courses that help you meet your degree requirements and explore areas of interest.  We’ll make sure that you are practiced in ethical decision making, capital budgeting, motivation and teamwork in the context of a global marketplace.
